    FPGA Implementation of an Adaptive Noise Canceller for Robust Speech Enhancement Interfaces

    This paper describes the design and implementation results of an adaptive Noise Canceller useful for the construction of Robust Speech Enhancement Interfaces. The algorithm being used has very good performance for real time applications. Its main disadvantage is the requirement of calculating several operations of division, having a high computational cost. Besides that, the accuracy of the algorithm is critical in fixed-point representation due to the wide range of the upper and lower bounds of the variables implied in the algorithm. To solve this problem, the accuracy is studied and according to the results obtained a specific word-length has been adopted for each variable. The algorithm has been implemented for Altera and Xilinx FPGAs using high level synthesis tools. The results for a fixed format of 40 bits for all the variables and for a specific word-length for each variable are analyzed and discussed

    Feasibility study to characterize the production of antineutrons in high energy pppp collisions through charge exchange interactions

    Simulations to evaluate the feasibility of nˉ\bar{n} identification and kinematic characterization via the hadronic charge exchange (CEX) interaction n+nˉp+pˉn+\bar{n}\rightarrow p+\bar{p} are reported. The target neutrons are those composing the silicon nuclei of which inner tracking devices present in LHC experiments are made. Simulations of pppp collisions in PYTHIA were carried out at different energies to investigate nˉ\bar{n} production and the expected nˉ\bar{n} energy spectra. Then, two types of GEANT4 simulations were performed, placing an nˉ\bar{n} point source at the ALICE primary vertex as a working example. In the first simulation, the EkE_k was kept at an arbitrary (1 GeV) fix value to develop an nˉ\bar{n} identification and kinematics reconstruction protocol. The second GEANT4 simulation used the resulting PYTHIA at spp=13\sqrt{s_{pp}}=13 TeV nˉ\bar{n} energy spectra. In both simulations, the occurrence of CEX interactions was identified by the unique outgoing pˉ\bar{p}. The simplified simulation allowed to estimate a 0.11% CEX-interaction identification efficiency at Ek=1E_k = 1 GeV. The pp CEX-partner identification is challenging because of the presence of silicon nucleus-fragmentation protons. Momentum correlations between the nˉ\bar{n} and all possible pˉp\bar{p}p pairs showed that pp CEX-partner identification and nˉ\bar{n} kinematics reconstruction corresponds to minimal momentum-loss events. The use of ITS dE/dxdE/dx information is found to improve nˉ\bar{n} identification and kinematic characterization in both simulations. The final protocol applied to the realistic simulation resulted in a nˉ\bar{n} identification and kinematic reconstruction efficiency of 0.006%, based solely on pˉp\bar{p}p pair observable. Thus, the expected rate of identified and kinematically reconstructed nˉ\bar{n} should lie in the order of 100,000 per second, illustrating the feasibility of the method.Comment: 6 pages, 11 figure

    Women Writers and Women’s Rights: The Denunciation of Women’s Conditions in the Texts of Mary Leman Grimstone and Gertrudis Gómez de Avellaneda

    Through the analysis of the prose of two nineteenth-century women writers: the English Mary Leman Grimstone and the Cuban-Spanish Gertrudis Gómez de Avellaneda, the present dissertation aims at unveiling the relationship between women’s writings and the struggle for the recognition of women’s rights in two different geopolitical locations. To do so, it weaves a Feminist Planetary Web between each writer and her context, as well as among both writers, finding points of connection and disconnection. It shows how women appropriated the pen in different geographical locations, exposing a particular female voice that denounced not only the oppression suffered by women, but also by other marginalized subjects. For each writer this dissertation exposes several macro-arguments present transversally in their work, like their critiques to the institution of marriage, the importance of proper education for women, the advocacy for religious tolerance, and the narrative construction of different male and female paradigms. The critiques to the institution of marriage is a point of connection between both authors. They also coincided in highlighting the importance of women’s right to access a proper education. Aside from these commonalities, this dissertation also analyses how Grimstone and Gómez de Avellaneda negotiated their position in the literary public realm, showing how it was precisely in this point that readers and critics can find noteworthy differences between them

    Woolliness assessment in peaches (Cv. Springcrest) by sensory and instrumental means.

    Mealiness is a negative attribute of sensory texture, characterised by the lack of juiciness without variation of total water content in the tissues. In peaches, mealiness is also known as "woolliness" and "leatheriness". This internal disorder is characterised by the lack of juiciness and flavour. In peaches, it is associated with interna browning near the stone and the incapacity of ripening although there is externa ripe appearance. Woolliness is associated with inadequate cold storage and is considered as a physiological disorder that appears in stone fruits when an unbalanced pectolitic enzyme activity during storage occurs (Kailasapathy and Melton, 1992). Many attempts have been carried out to identify and measure mealiness and woolliness in fruits. The texture of a food product is composed by a wide spectrum of sensory attributes. Consumer defines the texture integrating simultaneously all the sensory attributes. However, an instrument assesses one or several parameters related to a fraction of the texture spectrum (Kramer, 1973). The complexity of sensory analysis by means of trained panels to assess the quality of some producing processes, supports the attempt to estimate texture characteristics by instrumental means. Some studies have been carried out comparing sensory and instrumental methods to assess mealiness and woolliness. The current study is centered on analysis and evaluation of woolliness in peaches and is part of the European project FAIR CT95 0302 "Mealiness in fruits: consumer perception and means for detection". The main objective of this study was to develop procedures to detect woolly peaches by sensory and by instrumental means, as well as to compare both measuring procedures

    El presente trabajo de suficiencia profesional desarrolla la propuesta didáctica para promover el desarrollo socioemocional post pandemia en estudiantes de quinto año de educación secundaria de una institución educativa pública de Villa Pampa Hermosa, Yurimaguas, Loreto. Para ello, se fundamenta en el paradigma socio-cognitivo humanista: Piaget, Ausubel y Bruner (cognitivo), Vygostsky, Feuerstein, Bandura y Kohlberg (social y cultural) Sternberg, Román y Díez (teoría de la inteligencia). A través, de esta propuesta, el estudiante se vincula con su multidimensionalidad, expresada en las dimensiones de la tutoría, promoviendo su desarrollo socioemocional para desenvolverse de manera competente en la vida. El primer capítulo contiene la planificación del trabajo de suficiencia profesional, en el segundo capítulo el marco teórico y como último capítulo la programación curricular.This professional sufficiency work develops the didactic proposal to promote post pandemic socio-emotional development in fifth-year secondary school students from a public educational institution in Villa Pampa Hermosa, Yurimaguas, Loreto.     Transition of patients with metabolic bone disease from paediatric to adult healthcare services: current situation and proposals for improvement

The aim of this project was to analyse information on the experience of physicians in the transition of these patients in Spain, and to draw up consensus recommendations with the specialists involved in their treatment and follow-up. Methods The project was carried out by a group of experts in MBDs and included a systematic review of the literature for the identification of critical points in the transition process. This was used to develop a questionnaire with a total of 48 questions that would determine the degree of consensus on: (a) the rationale for a transition programme and the optimal time for the patient to start the transition process; (b) transition models and plans; (c) the information that should be specified in the transition plan; and (d) the documentation to be created and the training required. Recommendations and a practical algorithm were developed using the findings. The project was endorsed by eight scientific societies. Results A total of 86 physicians from 53 Spanish hospitals participated. Consensus was reached on 45 of the 48 statements. There was no agreement that the age of 12 years was an appropriate and feasible point at which to initiate the transition in patients with MBD, nor that a gradual transition model could reasonably be implemented in their own hospital. According to the participants, the main barriers for successful transition in Spain today are lack of resources and lack of coordination between paediatric and adult units. Conclusions The TEAM Project gives an overview of the transition of paediatric MBD patients to adult care in Spain and provides practical recommendations for its implementation.This study was sponsored by KYOWA KIRIN FARMACÉUTICA, S.L

    Multiplatform characterization of dynamic changes in breast milk during lactation

    The multicomponent analysis of human breast milk (BM) by metabolic profiling is a new area of study applied to determining milk composition, and is capable of associating BM composition with maternal characteristics, and subsequent infant health outcomes. A multiplatform approach combining HPLC‐MS and ultra‐performance LC‐MS, GC‐MS, CE‐MS, and 1H NMR spectroscopy was used to comprehensively characterize metabolic profiles from seventy BM samples. A total of 710 metabolites spanning multiple molecular classes were defined. The utility of the individual and combined analytical platforms was explored in relation to numbers of metabolites identified, as well as the reproducibility of the methods. The greatest number of metabolites was identified by the single phase HPLC‐MS method, while CE‐MS uniquely profiled amino acids in detail and NMR was the most reproducible, whereas GC‐MS targeted volatile compounds and short chain fatty acids. Dynamic changes in BM composition were characterized over the first 3 months of lactation. Metabolites identified as altering in abundance over lactation included fucose, di‐ and triacylglycerols, and short chain fatty acids, known to be important for infant immunological, neurological, and gastrointestinal development, as well as being an important source of energy. This extensive metabolic coverage of the dynamic BM metabolome provides a baseline for investigating the impact of maternal characteristics, as well as establishing the impact of environmental and dietary factors on the composition of BM, with a focus on the downstream health consequences this may have for infants

    The Spanish HIV BioBank: a model of cooperative HIV research

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The collection of samples from HIV-infected patients is the beginning of the chain of translational research. To carry out quality research that could eventually end in a personalized treatment for HIV, it is essential to guarantee the availability, quality and traceability of samples, under a strict system of quality management.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>The Spanish HIV BioBank was created with the objectives of processing, storing and providing distinct samples from HIV/AIDS patients, categorized according to strictly defined characteristics, free of charge to research projects. Strict compliance to ethical norms is always guaranteed.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>At the moment, the HIV BioBank possesses nearly 50,000 vials containing different prospective longitudinal study sample types. More than 1,700 of these samples are now used in 19 national and international research projects.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The HIV BioBank represents a novel approach to HIV research that might be of general interest not only for basic and clinical research teams working on HIV, but also for those groups trying to establish large networks focused on research on specific clinical problems. It also represents a model to stimulate cooperative research among large numbers of research groups working as a network on specific clinical problems. The main objective of this article is to show the structure and function of the HIV BioBank that allow it to very efficiently release samples to different research project not only in Spain but also in other countries.</p
